Draw Your Own Plant Spirits

FoAM has been working for a number of years on using games to strengthen the connection between plants and people. Our latest approach takes popular games such as FarmVille as inspiration, but seeks to explore what would happen if such games were infused with aspects of permaculture. What would happen if “plant spirit” characters helped or hindered you in your discovery and exploration of a world organised on the basis of companion planting?

Dave and Lina invited the public to join in with the design of their own characters on paper, which were then rebuilt in the running game for participants to play with. Visitors also had a chance to learn more about permaculture itself – as an ancient art of assembling “guilds” of mutually beneficial plant species – hinting at more general strategies and philosophies in design.
