Augmented Ecology and the Private Life of Plants

Theun Karelse, member of FoAM and initiator of Boskoi, hosted a discussion on augmented ecology, asking whether there is still a private life for plants and animals in a world dominated by ubiquitous surveillance technologies. Animals are fitted with tracking devices such as webcams and hooked up to SMS services, satellites monitor global crop development in real time, and ecosystem surveillance is crowdsourced through mobile technology.

An introduction to the local foraging scene in Helsinki was given by Joel Rosenberg, while Theun Karelse addressed new developments in foraging, new media, and Boskoi. Jussi Kivipuro discussed Greenpeace’s digital vision on mobile media strategies for ecoactivism.
