Engineering Symbiotic Futures
FoAM will be presenting the Machine Wilderness program during a panel at Transmediale 2017:
Becoming Earth: Engineering Symbiotic Futures
How can we re-imagine roles for technology in the natural environment? Can we think outside the human and repurpose technological systems and infrastructures to serve nonhuman organisms and beings? Answers to these questions will be offered through presentations of researchers and artists who are developing hybrid systems and prototypes for living landscapes, taking their intrinsic and diverse forms of agency into consideration. In this panel, prototypes for environmental robotics and a model for a self-owned augmented forest will be discussed. Speakers will explore to which extent new symbiotic relationships between machinic and heterogeneous living nonhumans can be achieved when nature’s rhythm is acknowledged and human roles are purposefully limited to being the initiator or diligent maintainer.
